Coal Co Bankrupcy

Coal milestone

On an entirely separate note, something huge happened on Wednesday. The world's largest private coal producer filed for bankruptcy.

The company, Peabody Energy, has mocked climate science in the past and - as our investigation last year discovered - presented coal as a solution to poverty. Their decline may not spell the end of coal, as our energy editor Terry Macalister explains, but they're part of the shift going on in the world's energy system.

Even in the UK, which is not famed for its sunny climes, solar power is beginning to beat coal power. And with solar energy exploding rapidly worldwide, and major countries expected to sign the Paris climate deal in New York next week, it's clear which direction the world is heading.
