Its a better idea to increase the tree cover with agro forestry method.But also lets think of agro forestry in the context of nutritional requirement and conditioning of soil fertility simultaneously.

As you probably know the west African country Ghana has taken up Dru stick tree(moringa oleifera) in large scale.

1) Moring plant can grow in marginal soil with little care

2) Moringa starts yielding within an year

3) Moringa is nutrient rich,pods and leaves can be used as vegetable seeds can be used to extract edible oil.

4) water requirement for moringa is very low,it requires water only in growth stage.

5) Moringa absorbs more carbon die oxide and produces more oxygen

So selection of species is quite essential.

Similarly many other local plant and trees can be considered.
