Norway gives $1billion for Amazon

Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 6 months ago

Norway has pledged to donate US$1 billion to reduce deforestation in Brazil.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg told Daily Planet Media that the money would be donated on the understanding that Brazil shows that deforestation is being reduced in the world's largest rainforest.

The donation will go towards the Amazon Fund launched last month by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, which aims to raise $US21 billion over 13 years to conserve and sustain development in the Amazon.

The Amazon Protection Fund supports forest conservation through scientific research and sustainable development projects including rubber tapping, forestry management and the creation of drugs from plants.

Latest forest data shows that deforestation slowed in July but the total area of trees removed may still increase this year.
