In a defeat for the Bush administration, the Supreme Court ruled Monday that a US government agency has the power under the clean air law to regulate greenhouse gas emissions that spur global warming. The ruling came in one of the most important environmental cases to reach the Supreme Court in decades. It marked the first high court decision in a case involving global warming.
In January, 10 major companies joined Environmental Defense and three other environmental organizations to call for a mandatory national cap on global warming pollution.
In February, energy giant TXU agreed to scrap plans to build 8 of 11 proposed coal-fired power plants in a buyout agreement Environmental Defense helped broker.
Several weeks ago, Maryland became the 12th state to pass state legislation curbing global warming pollution from vehicles sold in the state, with another 7 states considering similar legislation.
