Debate, Discuss and form Groups

Climate Change is now a concern in most people's minds, thanks to the last 2 years higher profile in the media for the facts as they emerge. However it is still low on the list of priorities of individuals or governments for many reasons. Until this changes we are in great danger.

Outright denial of the danger is now largely past. Those with a vested interest may now assume that we will be content with lightbulbs and political speeches for a few years. This alone will not solve the problem which scientists claim needs at least a 60% cut in total carbon emissions. Once the science is clearer the risk could be much greater.

There is now a 90% certainty among the top scientists in the world that we are heading for trouble. Do you let your children run around on the motorway if there is a 90% chance of them being injured?

The dangers we faced from Hitler were by no means 90% certain when the Spitfire was designed and built but thank God for those who did not wait for certainty. When the country was threatened those young enough enlisted and those too old formed the ARP or the Home Guard. They may be the subject of humour but at the time they united the nation in opposition to the danger.

The current danger is likely to be responsible for more deaths than all the wars in history as displaced people fight for the dwindling resources which remain. However, wait 'till the group is well established before scaring the pants off them!

A group needs to have realistic objectives. For example a village group might start by growing more vegetables, recycling more waste varieties, sharing transport or subsidising the local shop. From this might come a determination to share experiences of eco-home conversions or to invest in a joint electric car. A well written up eco-project will be increasingly valuable as concern grows.

There is hope if we get going NOW!
