A New Heaven and a New Earth

As we study the enormity of the problem it becomes increasingly clear that human beings are unlikely to co-operate well enough to solve the problem in time to prevent disaster. What will happen? It is not at all clear but it will include food shortages, water shortages, loss of species, and climate extremes leaving many populated areas unable to support the current population. This will in turn lead to migration and wars to gain or retain fertile land.

Will nuclear powers take extreme measures to reduce the world population? What other measures may be in the planning stages already? Will the most powerful prevail or the most numerous? It does not bear thinking about, but we must think?

Could there be an alternative when the situation is beyond mankind's abilities? Stephen Hawkin, in his book 'The Brief History of Time', explains the universe from an atheist point of view. He concludes with an explanation of String Theory which seeks to explain what there was before the Big Bang. The Big Bang could only have taken place if there were in existence several dimensions (pp 179-180). He suggests between 10 and 26!

Of course I do not understand the science of all this but it would explain how God could be so near, as He promises, and yet invisible. It would give some understanding of the consciousness of His presence that Christians sometimes experience, in particular when dying. It explains the whole afterlife mystery and many other mysteries as well.

I am not trying to prove the existence of God, or of any supreme being or force. Man has to make his own journey of discovery to find his maker. All I would like to do is show to a scientist that according to his own rules God is not impossible.

If not impossible, how would a hypothetical God as described in the New Testament feel about the mess the world is in? What would He want us to do about it? What would He do about it? Are we to be judged for our largely unintentional destruction of the planet? Does it all arise from our selfishness gone overboard and how can we redress the balance?

Is the story of Noah an indication of how God thinks now? Is He looking for people who will understand the problem and rescue a token part of His creation while the rest perish? Where are the Noah's of today? What will an Ark look like?

Or is it time for a New Heaven and a New Earth?

Please add your thoughts and prayers.

Malcolm
